A Band of Boxy Bunnies

Continuing Fictionist Studio’s tradition of zodiac-themed Chinese New Year gift sets, 2023 needed a gift pack for the Year of the Rabbit. I was focusing on how rabbits… multiplied quickly, which led me to be inspired by Matryoshka dolls which nest within each other.

Scratching my itch of a modular block system, a family of rabbits were developed to bring geometric joy to shelves. The lettering and illustration style were inspired largely by the whiskers and locomotion of rabbits, which had quite graceful arcs that are formed by their really long limbs and ears. Instead of working on a solid form, the suggestion of typography was prioritised, making decisions on legibility and gaps to form the lettering. 

A compact size became a larger priority this year to facilitate easier logistics and storage, so a common flat-pack box technique was turned upside down and became these lovely colourful boxy bunnies.
